Loving the hand drawn fantastical works of Khanage. I met Kristine recently and was immediately wisked off into a world of folk legend and inspiration.

This year Khanage will be involved in a big recycling project to collect old/broken surfboards, keep them off the dumps and give them a new lease of life by turning them into pieces of art.

Illustrating them with collected tales of the sea and the coastline. Highlighting places of interest, lost history and generally encouraging people to stop watching TV and keep talking/reading/telling tales!

Surf-Show 2010

We hit the road and attended our first surf-show down in Bristol the other week.

We knocked up a little shack and hung our shorts out to swing in delight at

their first proper outing.

We had our Launch Party on the 22nd April in a gallery in central London.

Keeping with the Gentleman Surfer theme, the shorts were hung in gilt frames,

we donned blazers and plied our party guests with rum 'Sharkbites'.

We decided to use Illustrations to depict the mood for this season rather than photography.

The theme for this season is 'The Gentleman Surfer'. The link pin of who we are and what we strive for. A foundation to grow from and also look back to.

We will be getting these lovely ink and water colour drawings printed onto postcards, so you

can send your loved ones a note of tales and adventure from your next beach trip.

Taking influences from period menswear details and pattern design

twisted perfectly with the notion of a 'Gentleman Surfer'.

These are designs I did many years ago for Speedo.

This concept was too directional for a commercial brand but helped

spawn the idea of sophisticated surf wear.

Just stumbled across these images the other day and thought

they help show the beginning of a journey ..

Our UK Digital Printing

We popped along to our digital printers the other day to see how they were getting along with our sampling. Our production is based in the middle of the beautiful English countryside, a great place to escape and focus on pattern and colour.

The great thing about the digital print process is its versatility and use of colour. Our Crazily Paisley print has too many colours to count and it's this depth that we want to push further.

All the inks are water based and environmentally friendly. The designs are printed onto paper first before being pressed onto the fabric. The results are quick with the inks fixed immediately.

The possibilities are endless, it's going to be fun..

It's My Island

After visiting The Royal Academy's new contemporary show 'Earth', it was these simple images that lingered longest. The photographs form part of the work by Finnish artist Antti Laitinen.

He built the island by dragging 200 sand bags into the Baltic Sea over a three month period. Enduring harsh weather conditions and pushing himself to the limits. The scenes evoke fundamental issues of citizenship and identity, here one man's own micro-nation.

The island didn't survive for long as the storms blew and even though Laitinen made running repairs, the elements won over. All that is left are these beautiful images, serene and

alluring.

Although the message is only loosely related to climate change, the meaning could stem from the notion that people would like to have their own island.. the ultimate ideal of personal space. Even if John Donne once wrote "No man is an island", it hasn't stopped him building one.

I know I want one...

A Fresh and Happy New Year

Boxing Day-

It felt the best way to get over the Christmas Mince Pie fest was to get some fresh air and stretch the legs. Leaving the overly hot lounge strewn with presents to clear the mind out in the open.

Although there wasn't much surf on, the south devon coast was blowy enough to clear the cob

webs and party haze away and to suck in the delights of bracing bays.

Even a small amount of time in the sea spray and blustery blue can inspire the mind to think

of taking on the world in the year ahead and doing all the great things that you always say you will. Just long enough until you realise your toes are numb and you're craving another mince pie..

A Proud Day

Captain's Log Stardate Year 1, day 300 and something. We received the first proto type on a heavy rainy English day to our studio (ironically named 'Sunny Cove Studios'). Taken on an ancient camera phone with our lucky ships cat trying to get a look in too. This is our first born, it was a proud day.

Rizcycling

"The act of giving back an old piece of recycled clothing so it can too again be recycled, in return for a helping hand towards another piece of recycled clothing".

For us sustainability seems too general a term , we want to focus the entire product life into a 360 degree process. With responsible thinking we can promote new methods of production and business models.

By working with Teijin's Eco Circle programme we are able to use a superior recycled polyester that can inturn be recycled back into raw polyester and reused into new products.

This process reduces energy consumption by 84% compared to the production of virgin fibre and cuts emissions by 77%, despite the additional impact of transport and shipping reclaimed material.

We do however reckon that our boardies are so well made and long lasting it'll be a while before we see our 'rizcycling' programme taking off. Oh well, best to be prepared eh?

Our first Collaboration

Greg Heinimann is a successful book cover Illustrator and graphic designer. He is also a folk guitarist and modern day dandy. All these characteristics meld perfectly with us and enhance our own sensiblilities too. It has been great having Greg on board to carve and style the graphic identity into the brand from it's birth. We like his traditional approach and skill of drawing and type setting and the use of illustrations to story tell. We also love the updating of classic styles and menswear traditions with a contemporary take on it.

We look forward to where his pen is going to take us and hope this gentlemanly scroll will stroll for a long while more.

It's been fizzing around for a long while, this expression I love and once heard or saw somewhere on my travels one research trip years ago. It was a feeling I knew was right and perfect for a tag line.

As the concept of the brand grew, the tag line could only be one thing. It's a mood everyone can relate and yet can be different to everyone too. For me it conjures of old school vocab, tongue in cheek humor and a sense of untainted happiness. It's got gusto and it makes me smile.

On doing some further research however, it turns out it does already exist have a small cult following from the retro cigarette brand advertising of the 80's. Back in the day when smoking

was good for you.

It seems even more fitting that in our present world of advertising and social values it can be now be used for a new type of 'good for you'. Spark up a pair of Riz Board shorts, you'll feel 'Alive with Pleasure!'
